AP Biology
Chapter 1: Introduction: Themes in the Study of Life
Evolution: the process or change that has transformed life on Earth from its earliest beginnings to the diversity of organisms living today
Biology: the scientific study of life
Concept 1.1:
The themes of this book make connections across different areas of biology
Theme: New properties emerge at each level in the biological hierarchy
Emergent Properties
New properties emerge at each step, properties that are not present at the preceding level

Why study Big Ideas in Biology?
? Biology is an ever expanding body of
knowledge?
? too much to memorize it all
? need to generalize

Groucho Marx Letter Questions :
Marx is known for being a comedian, starting off with ?Apparently? gives off a humorous vibe and essentially sets the tone for the letter. He intentionally start with a misunderstanding when he knows the true situation.
He?s trying to be witty, he knows it does not belong to the Warner Bros. but since they have tried to claim the name and act like they have ownership he makes the statement.

Article I
1.) Article I deals with the legislative departments such as Congress House of
Representatives and the Senate.
2.) They are elected every second year.

Population Ecology
Objectives
1)? Clumping? -Examples are patches of desert vegetation around springs, cottonwood trees
clustered along streams, wolf packs, flocks of geese, and schools of fish. The location and
size of these clumps vary with the availability of resources.
MOST COMMON (why?)- (1) Resources a species needs caru greatly in availability from
place to place (2) Living in herds, flocks, and schools can provide some animals with better
[1] Chemical evolution of the organic molecules, biopolymers, and systems of chemical
reactions needed to form the first cells; Took 1 billion years. Chemists have also conducted lab
experiments showing how simple inorganic compounds believed to be in the earth?s early
atmosphere might have reacted to produce amino acids, simple sugars, and other organic
molecules used as building blocks for the proteins, complex carbohydrates, RNA, and DNA
needed for life.
