NOTES Chapter 1: Introduction 8/18/2010 The living world is a hierarchy of structure: Atoms (smallest matter) ( molecule ( sub cellular organelles ( cells ( tissues ( organs ( organ system ( complex organism ( populations K( communities ( ecosystem ( biomes ( biosphere Life arises from these emergent properties: 1. Order (at least one cell) 2. Reproduction ? Life only comes from life. (except Biogenesis) 3. Growth & development ? directed by info stored in DNA 4. Energy Utilization- organisms take in energy to do work & release byproducts 5. Response ? to the environment, organisms respond to stimuli

Intro to Metabolism: Chp. 8 What is metabolism? What does metabolism do? What laws is it subject to? Describe the metabolic pathway process in one sentence. What are catabolic pathways? What is a major pathway of catabolism? What are anabolic pathways? What is an example of anabolism? What is fundamental to all metabolic processes? What is bioenergetics? What is energy? Explain the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy? Are heat and thermal energy a type of potential energy or kinetic energy? Why is it that type of energy? What determines a matter?s potential energy? What type of energy is chemical energy? How and where is it stored in? Can kinetic energy be converted into potential energy? Vice Versa? Give an example. What is thermodynamics?

Microscopes ? Light microscope ? frog eggs to some organelles. mainly for CELLS AS A WHOLE ? Electron microscopes ? Cells to atoms. Mainly for ORGANELLES o Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) ? makes image like a sheet or a topographical map or 3D images ? Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) ? makes 2D images ? Total magnification = ocular lens (usually 10x) times objective lens (4-400x) ? Higher the magnification ? smaller the field of view (the circle you?re looking at is smaller in real life)? 5 qualities of life Made of cell(s) Can reproduce Can grow and develop Obtain energy and use it Respond to environment REGEC = use this to remember somehow Reproduce, use Energy, Grow and develop, respond to Environment, made of Cells Are viruses life?

Gina Chavis and Alex Medlin Refuge Changes That Will Increase the Gopherus Polyphemus Population Introduction In recent times, many species are rapidly decreasing in population size, and scientists believe that we are going through the biggest and most rapid mass extinction known to man. The main reason for species demise is habitat loss due to human encroachment on land. One species greatly affected by habitat loss and other issues is the Gopher Tortoise. In the Endangered Species Act in 1987, Gopher Tortoises were becoming extinct because of extensive population declines (Jones & Dorr, 2004).

Neurodegenerative Diseases are described by a progressive loss of bodily functions. Different diseases have different symptoms; Alzheimer?s is characterized by the loss of memory while Parkinson?s, by rigid muscles. Such diseases do not have cures and treatments are limited. Researchers are desperate to find a cure for these diseases that affect millions of people today. Among those that are studied, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig?s disease has become one of the most widely researched. It is an adult-onset disease that targets the motor neurons of the body. Little is known about the disease and even less about its cause. However, there is one thing that ALS has in common with all of the other degenerative disease: neuroinflammation.
