When you are waiting at the doctor?s office, what do you do? Grab a magazine? Pull out your phone? In these activities, you are searching for entertainment. Even in the shortest periods of down-time, this search is instinctual in our minds. Widespread access to entertainment, whether it be television, cell phone games, or instant messaging, results in the expectation of instant gratification, this has had the most prominent negative impact to modern society. Instant gratification reduces an individual's attention span, especially when faced with undesirable tasks, thereby reducing productivity and increasing procrastination (example: the CofC application completed the night before it was due).

In the memoir "On dumpster diving" Lars Eisihner accounts his time as a 'scrounger.' He uses situational irony, word choice, and imagery in this piece to highlight the difference between what is expected of a person when they are homeless and live out of dumpsters. Throughout the piece, Lars emphasizes the high level of education he has, when he discusses Merriam-Webster, he talks about the research he put into the simple capitalization of the word, something that seems so insignificant. This contrasts the expected view of a 'Dumpster Diver.' Word choice is key here "Every grain of rice seems to be a maggot. Everything seems to stink...

?Spring Leaves? It is a breezy, sunny and clear day Finally, after months of patiently waiting Little green buds peek through the tips of the twigs Slowly emerging They eagerly open up to the warm sunlight And reach out, trying to capture the beams Which greets them with a light, comfortable touch New sprouts of leaves spread across branches They are flat, elliptical disks pleated along the middle Soon, the tree is completely adorned with emerald Pink, fragrant flowers pop up among the green Leaves sway and dance along with gusts of wind And sing quiet songs during a slight breeze Fresh, emerald, and little leaflets All new to the wondrous season of spring

?Roses? Pale pink petals Velvety, and as smooth as silk, But softer They gather together at the bottom Forming a perfect swirl They joyfully perch in the Welcoming, wonderful, warm hands of the sepals Which proudly present the flowers Whoosh! Whoooo! A slight breeze comes Husssss? The free-spirited leaves flap and rustle wildly Roses quiver in the wind, Thwush! They brush the cool air But almost as if in slow motion For they are lazy and graceful And entranced in a realm of comfort and softness They are dutiful and confident In representing the symbol of love And heralding the arrival of spring They proudly hoist their pretty heads up to the sky Displaying all delicacy and dignity Roses, more beautiful than anything else in the world

?The War Struck Planet? The hazy wind travels through the sooty atmosphere While the thick, ashen clouds conceal the sun?s rays Stinging, sulfuric smells dominate the scalding air Smoky as it may be, no one complains about the day The ground, still smoldering, remains cracked and parched Littered with sunken deep holes, like the moon?s cratered surface Everywhere is dappled in jet black and scorched But despite the wretched, dark scene, no one takes slight notice The water is a murky, ebony concoction of poison Greasy and bubbling, like a sea of slimy eels squirming about It is full of decay from holding debris in its liquid prison Yet no one suffers from this, or even finds out There is neither a hint of lush green, nor a flash of a fish?s iridescent scale
