The Lottery Analysis Essay The mortiful and dark short story The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, reveals the danger of blindly following tradition despite your personal preferences. In The Lottery, a group of townspeople are beginning the annual sacrifice of a citizen in order to maintain their crops. The townspeople truly dislike the tradition but the mayor maintains it out of the fear of the possibility that the town will resort to a primitive lifestyle. The tension throughout the community is apparent as they feel discomfort towards the old black box being used along with the whole tradition itself.

AP Literature and Composition Hawthorne Essay 2-25-16 Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 4th, 1804. He lived in a household that struggled for money most of his life, despite his ancestry. Despite his ancestors being involved in the Salem Witch Trials, he also had an interest in Puritan life as well, despite his upbringing in the 1800s. Him, along with his surviving family, were devout Puritans. His contempt and guilt towards his ancestry is reflected within Young Goodman Brown and The Minister?s Black Veil.
