As everyone pays closely attention to what Zainab was trying to say, her sister, Meher, is trying not care by slouching in the corner of the room. She dominates the talk by telling every single detail of her life. ?I baked Ghirardelli brownies yesterday in the afternoon with the oven set at 350 degrees Fahrenheit,? as she paused to take a breath, Meher opens her mouth to say something but, ?Oh, and when they came out they were so crisp on the outer surface yet moist with melted chocolate chips in the core of each four by four inch brownie.? As Zainab controls the conversation, her elderly uncle wanders his mind away from what she is saying.

SAR Questions 1. One of Hemingway's original titles for the book was the Lost Generation. In what way are the characters in the novel lost? In what ways has expatriate life corrupted the characters in Paris? Many who lived post WW1 were deemed as the Lost Generation through their lack of optimism following the very First World War. For example, many of the characters seem "lost" with their futures and lifestyles through their binge drinking and lack of sustenance in conversations. Jake, the main character, exemplifies the traits of a member of the lost generation though his drinking problem and inability to have children, physically losing a generation.
