Late 1800?s 1870- First official wildlife refuge established at Lake Merritt California. 1872- Yellowstone National Park established. Yosemite National Park Established. 1891- Forest Reserve Act authorized the president to set aside forest reserves. 1893- Few remaining American bison given refuge in Yellowstone National Park. 1900?s 1902- Reclamation Act promotes irrigation and water development projects in arid West. 1903- First National Wildlife Refuge at Pelican Island, Florida, established by President Theodore Roosevelt. 1904- Child lead poisoning linked to lead-based paints.
