US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

Quiz Guide #22 Election of 1980: Carter (Democrat) ran against Reagan (Republican). Carter restricted by the recession and his actions to handle foreign affairs of Camp David Accords and Iran Hostage Crisis. Reagan promised New Deal for Americans including less government spending, less government control, and more free enterprise. Reagan wins easily since most was against second Carter term. Reaganomics: "supply-side economics" (trickle down economy) It was Reagan's economy policy that called for tax reduction and strict spending watch. It would stimulate new investment and economic growth, boost productivity, and reduce federal debt. Lost revenues would come from cut of spending. He also let businesses operate at their own discretion.

The revolution was led by Fidel Castro who became the new leader of Cuba as a communist dictator. Brinkmanship: the act of pushing a situation to the verge of war in order to threaten and encourage one's opponent to back down. Quiz Guide#18 Alger Hiss: a prominent ex-New Dealer and a distinguished member of the "eastern establishment." accused of being a communist agent in the 1930s. He dramatically met his chief accuser before the Un-American Activities Committee in august but was convicted of perjury. Communist China: The turning point of the Cold War was when China turned "red" because it was the most populous country. Mao Zedong led communist revolution and he won against Jiang (Nationalist with no support). It changes the US policies; making presidents after Truman to vow not to lose any other country to communism.

Unit V Discussion Guide Part 1 The American Colossus The United States wanted to expand as other empires were to add to their factor of masculinity. The Great Rapprochement led to foreign policies aligned with Great Britain in order to keep the peace. The U.S. was guilty of becoming what the rebelled from because while they fought to be left alone and independent, they took that from Hawaii. I would support the interpretation because Spain proved that they were not responsible for the engine explosion and offered to pay for it anyways. Regardless, the U.S. Pushed for war.

Chapter 38 The presidency of Lyndon Johnson was successful because despite the dealings with Vietnam, he was able to get legislation passed, like voting rights, civil rights, and ultimately his Great Society plans. He was able to enormously improve the country with many domestic improvements, like Medicare for the poor, elderly, and women.
