US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

President Eisenhower won the 1952 election, partially on his promise to end the war in Korea but mostly on his name and reputation as the hero of World War II. Listen to Eisenhower?s statement. ?I Like Ike? became the rallying cry for America as he won a sweeping victory in 1952 and again in 1956, making him the president of the ?50s. Eisenhower worked to reduce the tensions of the Cold War abroad. On the home front, he oversaw the creation of the Interstate Highway System.

Alice Paul and Women Rights Essay - Vinay Adukalil - 23.04.2015 - Period 3 Alice Paul was a woman suffragist, woman rights activist and the main leader for the campaign for the 19th amendment which prohibited sex discrimination in the rights to vote. Alice Paul was born on January 11th 1885. She was born in Mooretown in New Jersey. She was a decedent of William Penn, the Quaker founder of Pennsylvania. Her mother was a woman suffragist even though her family views of women were that they were different than men. She used to go to her mother?s suffragist campaigns and meetings which helped her to fight for women rights in the future. She formed the National Woman?s Party with Lucy Burns. She suffered a lot to get these rights but at the end it played out well.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was formed in 1957 just after the?Montgomery Bus Boycott?had ended. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference?s (SCLC) main aim was to advance the cause of?civil rights?in America but in a non-violent manner. From its inception in 1957, its president was?Martin Luther King?? a post he held until his murder in 1968.

The Conquest of the Far West -?frontier? = place 4 new beginnings, opportunities, wealth, and adventure -Myths were created about the frontier that were not true except for some exceptions -People living in the West relied on the federal government -the idea of the frontier is the land that was unsettled, the west was the last frontier because people felt that once coast to coast was settled, the US would move into the area and populate it? it was a new territory that was not discovered. It was temporary because once settlements came about things became final and change/ challenges/ action began to stop. -Myth= life in the frontier was exciting/ thrilling/ unsettled

Theodore Roosevelt?s Foreign Policy- ?The Big Stick Policy?: Had an aggressive approach to foreign policy with Japan, Latin America, and Russia. Roosevelt Corollary: An extension of the Monroe Doctrine (1823), helped T.R. enforce his foreign policy. Gave the United States government ?International Police Power?, established influence oversees. Used when the Dominican Republican was in debt; the US came in and handled the debt. Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria: Russia and Japan were fighting over the region of Manchuria. Japan had aspirations to be a world power, felt threatened by Russia and United States. Open Door Policy (trade with China) threatened. T.R. settled the war in 1905, was rewarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. After the war was done, Japan wasn?t content.
