AP Human Geography Outline notes: Chapter one Section one: Thinking Geographically Maps Maps have two purposes: a tool for storing references material and a tool for communicating geographic information. For reference use, we use maps to find the distance between two places, or where something is, in relation to another place. As a communication tool, a map is used for depicting human activities, or physical features. A series of maps of the same place over several years can show dynamic processes. Placing information on a map is the main way for geographers to share data results, or scientific analysis. Early Mapmaking The earliest surviving maps were drawn on clay tablets by Babylonians in 2300 B.C.
