Homeostasis Maintaining internal balance whoaa! Mechanisms of homeostasis moderate changes in the internal environment Any homeostatic control system has 3 functional components: a receptor, a control center and an effector Regulators & Conformers regulators try to maintain the parameter at a constant level even with varying environmental variations. (ex: ectothermic animals? almost all other organisms?exhibit wide body temperature variation. (ex: endothermic mammals and birds maintain a constant body temperature) conformers allow the environment to determine the parameter. Negative feedback A change in an internal variable will stimulate a response that counteracts the initial fluctuation until the system goes back to its normal state Negative feedback Negative feedback

Intertidal Zone Tessa Gebhart What is it? The intertidal zone is the area of the foreshore and seabed that is exposed to the air at low tide and submerged at high tide, the area between tide marks. Also known as the littoral zone. There are four areas of the intertidal zone. Spray Zone This area is dry much of the time, but is sprayed with salt water during high tides. It is only flooded during storms and extremely high tides. High Tide Zone Area is flooded only during high tide. Middle Tide Zone This area is both wet and dry due to it being uncovered twice a day by the tide going out. Low Tide Zone Usually underwater and only exposed when the tide is unusually low ANIMALS Abiotic Factors Animals in the rocky intertidal zone are fully exposed to the elements.

Simple, small, single-celled bacteria Have NO nucleus and mitochondria Contain few organelles Lack membrane-bound organelles Do not have chromosomal DNA Instead their genetic information is in the form of a circular loop called a plasmid Reproduce asexually by binary fission Most prokaryotes have one of 3 basic shapes Bacillus = Rod-shaped Coccus = Spherical Spirillum = Helical-shaped All organisms in the primitive Earth were thought to be prokaryotic Prokaryotic cells do not depend on oxygen for respiration, therefore they are extremely diverse and live almost anywhere in the biosphere Bacteria were once classified as the Monera kingdom. But today biologists separate bacteria into two kingdoms: Archaebacteria Eubacteria Archae = Ancient
