Ar?Reon Watson Reaction Paper 10/6/2012 Alexis Tocqueville: From Democracy in America In 1831, French aristocrat, Tocqueville took an approach towards studying a social and political event going on in America; American democracy. A man that seemed to be very fond of America came to talk about studying preceding history, ?The New World? without aristocracy, and the love a democracy in America has for equality. America was the only country he saw the growth of society and its influences on the ?New world? and its people. With democracy comes equality and it is a principle in which people revert to individualism, when they all want to have wealth and property. Tocqueville talked about saving the nations freedom, as it wasn?t being used.

From the heart of the country rose two individuals, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Both of their political philosophies formed the basis of all development to come. Disputed issues such as interpretation of the constitution, the Louisiana Purchase, as well as who should manage public affairs, solidified the internal conflict of a growing nation. One disputed issue at hand being the way the United States should go about running itself, Hamilton and Jefferson possessed two very different views.

Rule of law prevented one person from becoming too powerful. In ancient times there were tyrants and monarchs, people who had supreme rule. These people could essentially do what they want because they were higher than the law. However, rule of law gave the lower-class citizens a chance because everyone was under the same rules. Upon examining Aristotle’s writings, Great Britain’s democratic developments, and the French Revolution, you can further see how important the rule of law is.

Fascists believe that a nation requires strong leadership, singular collective identity, and the will and ability to commit violence and wage war in order to keep the nation strong. Fascist governments forbid and suppress opposition to the state.
