DEVELOPING YOUR ?TONE WORD? VOCABULARY Determining the ?tone? of a piece of writing is a vitally important clue in interpreting the piece?s meaning. For this reason, AP test readers particularly value this quality. They go so far as to say that if you get the tone wrong in your essay, you will not pass their test. Regardless of whether or not your goal is passing the AP test, however, learning how to discuss the tone of a piece of writing is an important skill for college writing. Once you become proficient at it, it becomes an easy way to discuss almost any piece of writing . . . no matter what class you are in at the time. Mark Twain was way ahead of his time in much of his writings. Though he didn’t flat-out say it, early in the novel, Twain sent the reader the message that the color of your skin is not what makes you a good or a bad person. Huckleberry Finn’s father, Pap, is hands down the worst man in Huck’s town, yet ironically he feels the need to hate on every black person that walks by. Twain shows his hidden opinion to the reader in the way that Pap talks about the black professor who had visited their town… “Here’s a govment that calls itself a govment, and lets on to be a govment, and thinks it is a govment, and yet’s got to set stock-still for six whole months before it can take a-hold of a prowling, thieving, infernal, white-shirted free nigger….” (38)

Kim Sei-in Kim Mrs. Deetlefs English Literature 2 12 September 11 2011 Symbols and Motifs Used in the Novel 1984 George Orwell is a very well known writer, especially for his two major novels 1984 and Animal Farms. One common thing that the two novels, have is that Orwell intensely satires the social structure of communism, presenting gloomy predictions of it. However, more important than that is that Orwell uses symbolism in both novels. In this essay, I will discuss 3 different kinds of symbols and motifs: the Party?s surveillance, their mental control over people, and links to the past. First of all, Big Brother and the telescreens can be symbols and motifs for the party?s
