Although it may be a bit early to start ushering in the new school year, it never helps to be prepared. I remember back to my 8th grade summer - tears had been shed on that last day, when everyone split in to separate high schools yet there was an excitement to be felt in the air as well. We were now freshman.
As I was looking back, a question popped into my head. What do I wish someone had told me as a freshman before starting high school?

Acing a class is actually quite easy. First of all, show up to class and pay attention. Also, take notes and ask questions if there is anything you don't understand. The teacher is there to help. Remember that extra credit does help and do extra credit whenever you have the opportunity. For tests and finals, rely on your notes and previous work. They make great study tools. And don't study at the last minute, it never works.

High school is a time for making friends and having the time of your life. But what you really need to remember is that high school is also the time for learning and the time for college preparation. You need to remain focused on your ultimate goals in high school. With all of the excitement and distractions it is easy to lose sight of them. Many students find themselves saying,"Well, I'll just raise my GPA next year...". What they don't realize is that it takes double the work to do this.

The Junior Executive Institute is an adventure of a lifetime. The office of Diversity Initiative at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington holds two sessions of this one-week camp every summer. This year in Session2, 23 minority students from across the nation, and one from outside the states gathered to learn the ins and outs about business.
