Gina Chavis and Alex Medlin Refuge Changes That Will Increase the Gopherus Polyphemus Population Introduction In recent times, many species are rapidly decreasing in population size, and scientists believe that we are going through the biggest and most rapid mass extinction known to man. The main reason for species demise is habitat loss due to human encroachment on land. One species greatly affected by habitat loss and other issues is the Gopher Tortoise. In the Endangered Species Act in 1987, Gopher Tortoises were becoming extinct because of extensive population declines (Jones & Dorr, 2004).

For any base, the logarithm function has a singularity at . In the above plot, the blue curve is the logarithm to base 2 (), the black curve is the logarithm to base (the natural logarithm ), and the red curve is the logarithm to base 10 (the common logarithm, i.e., log, ). Note that while logarithm base 10 is denoted in this work, on calculators, and in elementary algebra and calculus textbooks, mathematicians and advanced mathematics texts uniformly use the notation to mean , and therefore use to mean the common logarithm. Extreme care is therefore needed when consulting the literature. The situation is complicated even more by the fact that number theorists (e.g., Ivić 2003) commonly use the notation to denote the nested natural logarithm .

I.?? ?Ancient Iran, 1000?30 b.c.e. A.?? ?Geography and Resources 1.?? ?Iran?s location, bounded by mountains, deserts, and the Persian Gulf, left it open to attack from Central Asian nomads. The fundamental topographical features included high mountains on the edges, salt deserts in the interior, and a sloping plateau crossed by mountain streams. 2.?? ?Iran had limited natural resources. Water was relatively scarce, and Iran?s environment could only support a limited population. Because of the heat, irrigation networks had to use underground tunnels. Construction and maintenance of underground irrigation networks was labor-intensive and advanced under a strong central authority. Iran had mineral resources?copper, tin, iron, gold, and silver?and plentiful timber.
