Amir Gooden September 21, 2010 6th period Pythagoras: Math?s Greek God Love it or hate it, you use Math on a daily basis. In fact, it probably starts to occur in such a manner that you tend not to even think of it too much. However, for things to flow logically, someone had to physically take the time to find out this stuff, right? Literally take the precious time to sit, stand, however they preferred, and used their intelligence to devise these complex systems of numbers, variables, and symbols. And even harder, explain themselves to the general public. In such a developmental area of time, the B.C.E. era, Greece was quite ahead of its time. One of its members, Pythagoras, laid the ground work for The Pythagorean Theorem.

I. African Genesis A. Interpreting the Evidence 1. In 1859 Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, in which he suggested that species evolve over long periods of time through the process of natural selection. With regard to human beings, Darwin speculated that humans must be “descended from a hairy, tailed quadruped,” and that the process of human evolution must have started in Africa. 2. Discoveries of hominid skeletal remains in Java (1891) and Beijing (1929) indicated Asian origins for human beings. However, the African origins of human beings were suggested by the discovery of Australopithecus africanus in 1924 and confirmed by the work of the Leakeys in eastern Africa beginning in 1950.

syn-Propanethial S-oxide (C3H6OS) is a gas that acts as a lachrymatory agent (triggers tearing and stinging on contact with the eyes). The chemical is released from onions, Allium cepa, as they are sliced. The release is due to the breaking open of the onion cells and their releasing enzymes called alliinases, which then break down amino acid sulfoxides, generating sulfenic acids. A specific sulfenic acid, 1-propenesulfenic acid, formed when onions are cut, is rapidly rearranged by a second enzyme, called the lachrymatory factor synthase or LFS, giving syn-propanethial S-oxide. The gas diffuses through the air and, on contact with the eye, it stimulates sensory neurons creating a stinging, painful sensation.
