??? The mass-hysteria and belief of witchcraft and black magic had been around before the outbreak in Salem. European countries had outbreaks of this mass hysteria during the black plague. These accusations were a way for society to put the blame on something that they did not have any logical explanation for. Witchcraft was the answer to everything unknown. Various theories have been made about exactly what caused the Salem witch trials. Religious influence, politics, gender, social standards, geography, and limited medical knowledge were many of the factors in the theories developed on the Salem witch trials. ?

The Salem witch Trials occurred in 1692. A number of girls were accused of being bewitched by a Caribbean woman practicing voodoo. Names were named and people were being accused. A total number of twenty people including innocent people were executed. in 1693 the Salem residents saw the recklessness for what it was and called it off.

The captivating events that culminated in the execution of 20 citizens have been an issue of great intrigue for centuries. While there is disagreement as to the cause of the trials, it is evident that understanding the inducement of that summer?s events is imperative to understanding Puritan society. Evidence suggests that the events of 1692, which likely began as childish play, came to fruition as a result of dogmatism, paranoia, and ensuing political opportunism between the Putnam and Porter families.
