The First Golden Rule of Fashion

Whoever said ‘what you wear doesn’t matter’ was indeed a fool, because what you wear does matter, it mattered back in our parents’ parent’s time and it matters now and will continue to matter in the generations to come.

My sophomore year, a friend of mine presented an English project all about Fate. He concluded that he could effectively stop trying since everything was preordained. Fate ruled and free will was a weak mortal idea, according to his presentation. At the time, I didn’t entirely understand the concept. I wasn’t sure what it could mean for humans if their free will was taken away. How could society function without accountability?

Among the various materials necessary for college applications, teacher recommendations seem the ones over which you have least control because you can’t directly produce them. However, you can bend the situation in your favor. The quality of your recommendations reflects your relationship skills. No matter how many laudatory sentences are written about you, if they contain no passion, admissions officers will detect the lack of enthusiasm. Clearly, getting recommendations isn’t an overnight job, so where do you start?

It’s May and you have to begin preparing for a test that will tell you how well you have mastered an already difficult class. The AP exam has discouraged many students from even attempting the course that they are interested in. I am someone who was scared but I learned how to prepare for the AP exam and found it rather successful. As a sophomore I took AP World History and received a 4 on a scale of 1-5, I also received two fours my junior year for AP U.S History and AP English III. The AP test is not there to make you fail, but to give a standard fair judgment of everyone in the nation.

As I quickly approach my senior year, I feel the flood of college applications, essays, extensions, projects, and summer homework enveloping my supposed summer “break”. But what is it really a break from? My summers tend to be busier than my school years, planned to perfection during the months of April and May. Once I reach my second semester of senior year, I swear, I’m done. No more hard work, no more all-nighters. I will have a case of senioritis – which may or may not be a good thing.

Do you know what irks me? SUMMER READING! Picture this, end of the school year: no more tests, homework, assignments, book reports, math problems nothing.

As I go into my senior year, I have the list of colleges I would like to apply to already in my head. However, figuring that out came with a lot of difficulty, and I wish I had some sort of guide to help me along the way. Therefore, I decided to help incoming juniors (and maybe some seniors) out in what to look for when applying to college. Here is my guide, made for you, on how to pick the right college!

First things first: What do you want to do?

So, some of you may have seen my earlier post appropriately titled "Metaphors you shall never use. Ever." with the first half of this ridiculous list. And here is the second half. Sadly, I can't take credit for writing these marvelous metaphorical monsters (hey, that was an alliteration! My English teach would be proud). But while they may not help you in the least bit with school work, they're quite funny. Which should count for something...

Balding grandfathers in muscle shirts have been grumbling at an all-time high recently, this and that about how back in their day, “things were different.” How once upon a time in America, young men could always find jobs in coalmines and corner markets while girls watched their neighbors’ children for a few dollars or learned how to bake mean pies from their mothers in hopes of scoring positions at local diners making Coke floats and classic burgers.
