US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

Western North American mountains were born 135 to 25 million years ago, after the continent took on its separate identity. ? Canadian Shield - a zone undergirded by ancient rock. This anchored the northeastern corner. ? Great Ice Age took place 2 million years ago. ? When the glaciers retreated about 10,000 years ago, they left North America as we know it today. 2. Peopling the Americas ? Most people probably came to the Americas by land. ? The Ice Age caused sea level to drop and exposed a land bridge connecting Eurasia with North America. ? As sea levels rose, the land bridge inundated.

War of 1812 DBQ The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and ended in stalemate. It did however, once and for all confirm American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed to capture Canada. On the other hand, the British army was successfully stopped when it attempted to capture Baltimore and New Orleans. There were a number of American naval victories in which American vessels proved themselves superior to similarly sized British vessels. Instructions: Read Documents 1-6 to answer questions #1-10 as well as the Essay Question. Essay Question: Explain the causes and consequences of the War of 1812, why is it often known as the Second War of Independence.

APUSH Writing the Document-Based Question (DBQ) The APUSH exam format includes one document-based question. Students will have 55 minutes to answer it. Guidelines Long-essay writing skills. The initial mystery of answering a DBQ largely disappears if you remember that it builds on the skills for writing the long-essay question, including the skills of developing a background statement (B), thesis that ?takes a position (TAP)? and has a ?roadmap (R)?; argumentation supported with relevant historical evidence; use of targeted historical thinking skills; contextualization, and synthesis. The basic difference between the long-essay question and a DBQ is that in the DBQ students must analyze and use documents in your supporting arguments.

War of 1812 War between the US and Great Britain. America declared war... Causes: Great Britain had violated American Sovereignty by refusing to surrender western forts as promised in the Treaty of Paris Great Britain began stopping American sea vessels and forcing subjects on the vessels into the British military. Known as "impressment" Great Britain issues trade restrictions designed to disrupt American trade with France Great Britain provided arms and support to Native Americans in the west who were attacking American settlers Great Britain controlled much of Canada and many Americans wanted Britain to leave North American continent Major Events: Washington D.C. 1814- British burned buildings down in Washington D.C.

DBQ 13 During the Gilded Age, the 30 year time period after the Civil War, America as a country began to shift in ways of life and political beliefs. The industrial revolution began with an increase in railroads, telegraph, steel, oil, and more. As a shift from the previous agricultural based time period before the civil war to manufacturing, farmers are feeling the direct impact of this economic shift. During this time, the economic disputes, political imbalances, and social shifts explains why farmers were discontent with the nations politics. As a result, the number of farmers in the US declined, the Farmers Alliance was created, and a new third party known as the Populist party arose.

DBQ 19 As of the 1970?s, the United States had been faced with economic and social turmoil., The Vietnam war, lasting from 1965-1975, was a controversial issue among many Americans. Most argued that it was not a war the US needed to be involved and ultimately wasted money and resources. Former President Nixon faced confrontation over the Watergate scandal as the economy under President Carter?s administration continued to decline. These conflicts created a mistrust between the national government and the American people. In 1980, Ronald Reagan is elected as presidents in hopes to improve the nation?s economy. The Reagan administration was overall effective in addressing the domestic and foreign affairs presented to them.
