US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

Fredericksburg?the Union forces were slaughtered by the Confederates. Vicksburg?was, at the time, under siege by the Union in order to control the Mississippi and split the Confederates in half (a.k.a., the Anaconda Plan). ^ Siege of Vicksburg. ^ Before the Battle?What happened? When Gen. Lee learned that Meade is in Pennsylvania blocking them from Washington D.C., he based his forces in Gettysburg. Meade?s forces (primarily Brigade General Buford, and Colonel Chamberlain. Before the Battle?What happened? Lee wanted to weaken the North?s will and want to fight the South.

The want for the war was not brought on by the North for economic gain, as some may believe, but by the South; who risked war to keep their treasured institution. Beard and Hacker deemed the Civil War as " the Second American Revolution" Unlike Degler Due to Triumph to the Northern Business Interest They believed The American struggle could be compared to the European bourgeois revolutions which is when the middle class revolutionized industry and modernized society in France To refute this Evidence - Northern business not throttled by southern domination of government - Business recieved aid from southern-dominated governments - favoritism torwards northern shipping - wishes not obtained by the North did not constitute a war
