Molecular Biology STUDY GUIDE for FINAL EXAM MOLECULAR BIOLOGY MASTER LIST OF UNITS Unit 1: Scientific Method Unit 8: Photosynthesis Unit 2: Chemistry Basics Unit 9: Respiration Unit 3: Organic Molecules Unit 10: Cell Division Unit 4: Energy Unit 11: Protein Synthesis Unit 5: Cells and Cell Transport Unit 12: Reproduction Unit 6: Classification Unit 13: Genetics Unit 7. Evolution MAJOR THEMES OF BIOLOGY 1. Structure is related to function. ex. waterproofing on organisms is made of lipids which are non-polar. ex. structures which absorb light are flat and thin to maximize surface area with the least amount of material 2. New properties emerge at each level of organization. Small changes in molecules can result in an enormous

Hardy-Weinberg problem set Hardy-Weinberg Theorem states that if a population is NOT evolving then the frequencies of the alleles in the population will remain stable across generations - it is in equilibrium. We can use the Hardy-Weinberg equation to make predictions about the relative frequency of the different alleles (as well as the associated genotypes), even if there is population growth, as long as the five conditions we discussed in class hold true. Think about what those five conditions are......... no mutations, no natural selection, no gene flow, large population size, random mating Alternatively, Hardy-Weinberg equation can be a means to determine if a population is indeed evolving - that the allele frequencies are changing and therefore NOT at

I. How population Evolve. The Physical feature of animals is examples of evolutionary adaptations inherited traits that enhance an organisms’ ability to survive and reproduce in particular environment. Evolution, inherited changed in organisms over the time. A. A sea voyage helped Darwin frame his theory of evolution. Darwin thought that organisms change over time as the earth changes. The natural resource has changed many things like mountain and as a result of earth quakes there are marine snails on top of the mountains. Also those organisms are related somehow from the past. He phrase for evolution, descent with modification. B. The study of fossil provides strong evidence for evolution.

I. A Tour of the Cell A. All living organism have cell. B. Microscopes provide windows to the world of the cell. 1. A light microscope is the first microscope and it works by passing visible light through a specimen. 2. Then Electron microscope came that uses beam of light. It’s much powerful then the light microscope about small as 1nm can be seen. Then scanning electron microscope came out to study the detailed architecture of cell surface. It also uses electron beam to scan the surface of a cell or group of cells that have been coated with metal. 3. Transmission electron microscope is used to study the details of internal cell structure. With the cut specimens the electromagnets bend the electron beams to magnify and focus an image onto a viewing screen or photo.
