Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation(s?) September 28, 2010 How did the ideas of Martin Luther challenge the Roman Catholic Church? Luther's Background Studied law at the university of Er fut Luther became a monk because he was hit by lightening Very dedicated as a monk (he WAS, though, aware of criticism of church) Concerned with salvation salvation, he thought God would never be satisfied with his works. Influenced by st. Augustine everyone born into sin, but people saved by grace not works. Luther chosen to study at university of Wittenerg(1511) Luther became a professor on the books of the Bible. His idea of Justification by faith Salvation is sola fide (by faith alone) Salvation depends on sola gratia (grace alone)

English Transplantations SRFI Activity Terms: Evicted Tenants ? Tenants that once worked on fields that were evicted so that the fields could be used as pastures for sheeps. Richard Hakluyt ? Oxford clergy man and the outsanding English propagandist for colonization. Argued colonies would not only create new markets for English goods, they would also help alleviate poverty and unemployment. English Reformation ? King Henry VIII was refused by the pope to get a divorce. England broke all ties with the catholic church. Henry VIII Established himself as the head of the Chrsitian faith in his country. Martin Luther ? Martin Luther began the protestant reformation. Did this by challenging some of the basic practices and beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church.

The puritans of the New England colonies came over from Britain in 1629 to escape from the Anglican Church and other political and religious persecutions in England. In making this colony, they were to be “a city upon a hill”, according to John Winthrop. This meant that they were to be set up on the principles of the Bible and to be an example to the rest of the world through their actions and good deeds. Due to all of the factors and influences of the society, the Puritan colony ideas influenced the political, economic, and social development of the New England colonies in its early years.
