Roman Senate- advisory council to kings and Republican officials. Real center of power. Self-perpetuating body. Brought together state?s wealth, influence, politics, military. Patron/client relationship- binds individuals and families. Client seeks help and protection. Patron gets support of client who works his land. Inequality accepted. System of mutual benefit. Roman Principate- period following Roman Republic. Same forms of Republic, but realities of power altered. Military dictator ?first among equals?

Calvinism Set of beliefs that the Puritans followed. In the 1500's John Calvin, the founder of Calvinism, preached virtues of simple worship, strict morals, pre-destination and hard work. This resulted in Calvinist followers wanting to practice religion, and it brought about wars between Huguenots (French Calvinists) and Catholics, that tore the French kingdom apart. Massachusetts Bay Colony One of the first settlements in New England; established in 1630 and became a major Puritan colony. Became the state of Massachusetts, originally where Boston is located. It was a major trading center, and absorbed the Plymouth community Dominion of New England

Gina Chavis and Alex Medlin Refuge Changes That Will Increase the Gopherus Polyphemus Population Introduction In recent times, many species are rapidly decreasing in population size, and scientists believe that we are going through the biggest and most rapid mass extinction known to man. The main reason for species demise is habitat loss due to human encroachment on land. One species greatly affected by habitat loss and other issues is the Gopher Tortoise. In the Endangered Species Act in 1987, Gopher Tortoises were becoming extinct because of extensive population declines (Jones & Dorr, 2004).

Civil Disobedience Summary: Thoreau begins by arguing that government rarely proves itself useful and that it derives its power from the majority because they are the strongest group, not because they are the most correct. He believes that people's first obligation is to do what they believe is right and not to follow the law dictated by the majority. Basically, person is not obligated to devote his life to eliminating evils, but she or he is obligated not to participate in such evils. This includes not being a member of an unjust government. Thoreau argues that the united states fits his criteria for an unjust government, of slavery and its practice of aggressive war [the Mexican war].
