Chapter IX - Development Why Does Development Vary Among Countries? Development ? Process of improving conditions through the diffusion of technology and knowledge. More Developed Country (MDC) ? Progress further along the development process. Less Developed Country (LDC) ? Earlier stage of development. Human Development Index (HDI) ? A measurement of a country?s level of development, created by the UN, and includes three factors, economic, social, and demographic. The nature of imperialism transitioned from neighboring groups conquering one another for territorial expansion to entire nations competing for global economic, political, and cultural power. Today, the exponential growth of technology and industry is creating one globalized economy. This global economy has found a way to transcend the boundaries large hegemonic powers historically could never unite, changing the nature of nations.

Globalization – the process of global social, economic, and environmental change that leads to an increasingly integrated world. 1 in 11 people (worldwide) have Internet access. Exotic and invasive species are transported to faraway continents in a matter of days through ocean going vessels and airplanes where they have no known predators. An abundance of atmospheric pollutants from car exhaust is found in Greenland, although this country doesn’t own too many cars, from the US mainland.
