11776448404the endocrine systemhormones released into the bloodstream travel throughout the body1
11776460125in the endocrine system, results may take longer, but last longer2
11776464370the nervous systemrelease neurotransmitters that excite or inhibit nerve, muscle, and gland cells3
11776478764in the nervous system, results in milliseconds, brief duration of effects4
11776494168cell communication is necessary forthe integration of cell activities5
11776498649gap junctions (direct signaling)pores in cell membrane along which signaling chemicals move from cell to cell (smooth/cardiac muscle)6
11776516736neurotransmittersreleased from neurons to travel across to a postsynaptic cell7
11776524159paracrine (local hormones)secreted into tissue fluids to effect nearby cells which transfer information from cell to cell within a single tissue8
11776578353hormones (strict definition)chemical messengers that travel in the bloodstream and stimulate responses in another tissue or organ9
11776656296means of communication: nervous systemhas both electrical and chemical methods10
11776659433means of communication: endocrine systemhas only chemical methods11
11776676307speed and persistence of response: nervous systemreacts quickly (1-10 sec) and stops quickly12
11776676308speed and persistence of response: endocrine systemreacts slowly (hormone release in seconds or days) effect may continue for weeks13
11776706245area of effect: nervous systemtargeted and specific (one organ)14
11776710692area of effect: endocrine systemmay have general, widespread effects on many organs15
11776737932several chemicals function as both hormones and neurotransmittersnorepinephrine and epinephrine16
11776749520both system with overlapping effects on same target cellsnorepinephrine and glucagon cause glycogen hydrolysis in liver17
11776767567both systemsregulate each other18
11776771639neurons can triggerhormone secretion19
11776776684hormones canstimulate or inhibit neurons20
11776788144exocrine glandsecrete their products into ducts which empty into body cavities or body surface21
11776805912example of exocrine glandssweat, oil, mucous, digestive glands22
11776820779endocrine glandssecrete their products (hormones) into bloodstream23
11776835197example of endocrine glandspituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal24
11776852538other organs secrete hormones as a second function such ashypothalamus, thymus, pancreas, ovaries, testes, kidneys, stomach, liver, small intestine, heart, placenta25
11776890123endocrine glands help regulateextracellular fluid metabolism biological clock contraction of cardiac and smooth muscle glandular secretion some immune functions growth and development reproduction26
11776928358components of the endocrine systemhormone target cells endocrine glands27
11776988533hormonechemical messengers secreted into bloodstream, stimulates reponse in another tissue or organ28
11776999906target cellshave receptors for hormone29
11777004934endocrine glands producehormones30
11777016606endocrine system includesendocrine organs (thyroid, pineal, etc) and hormone producing cells in organ such as heart and small intestine31
