Compound Naming Ionic: ends in ?ide NaCl -binary compound (two element) - a ratioempirical formula - sodium chlorineide Metals: use roman numbers to indicate charge What happens when you are naming metals? -Metals can take on a number of charges, and thus don?t have a set charge. For example: Cr+3Cl3- and Cr+2Cl2 both would be called ?chromium chloride? if we use the above rule. Thus, we resort to using roman numerals to denote charge. Cr+2Cl2 is now known as chromium III chloride Cr+3Cl3- is now known as chromium II chloride. Molecular: denote subscripts make sure the molecule doesn?t consist of ionic or metallic bonds CO carbon MONoxide CO2 carbon DIoxide P2S5 DIphosphorus PENTsulfide NOTE: put cations (positive) first Emperical Formula: reduce the numbers C1H2O1=CH2O

V=M/D; D=M/V Mixtures contain more than 1 substance, but a compound is only 1 substance Liters are a derived unit Graduated Cylinder measures volume of liquid When balancing an object on a triple beam balance, there are times when your measurement is between two numbers. If a measurement is between 2.3 and 2.4, you must round the number to the nearest 0.05, making your answer 2.35.

Solubility Equilibria Ch. 15 part 2 15.6 Solubility: amount (usually ________ ) of ________ that can dissolve in a given amount (usually __________) of ___________ Solubility of ionic compounds: table (from summer assignment) Dissolving reactions of ionic compounds: soluble compounds: dissociate ____________ into ions (_________ arrow reaction) ex. slightly soluble or insoluble compounds: dissociate __________ into ions (_______ arrow reaction) equilibrium constant: Ksp (________________________ constant) = Note: size of Ksp does NOT necessarily indicate size of solubility! Solubility must be ____________. *calculate Ksp from solubility *calculate solubility from Ksp HW: Ch. 15 Q. 81, 85, 89

Page 1 / 249 PREFACE In the ACs? conference held in July, 2010 at KVS (HQ), New Delhi, issue of Study Material for Board classes was discussed at length and finally decided to provide it to students. Various Regional Offices were asked to prepare the study material in different subjects while the task of its correction and moderation was assigned to various ZIETs of KVS. KVS, ZIET, Chandigarh received study material in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology &Maths for XII, Maths and Science &Tech. for X class, from various Regional Offices. The study material was got reviewed and suitably modified by organising workshops of experienced and competent subject
