Chapter 6 Organic Chemistry, 7th Edition L. G. Wade, Jr. Alkyl Halides: Nucleophilic Substitution and Elimination ?2010, Prentice Hall Chapter 6 * Classes of Halides Alkyl halides: Halogen, X, is directly bonded to sp3 carbon. Vinyl halides: X is bonded to sp2 carbon of alkene. Aryl halides: X is bonded to sp2 carbon on benzene ring. C C H H H C l vinyl halide C H H H C H H B r alkyl halide I aryl halide Chapter 6 Chapter 6 * Polarity and Reactivity Halogens are more electronegative than C. Carbon?halogen bond is polar, so carbon has partial positive charge. Carbon can be attacked by a nucleophile. Halogen can leave with the electron pair. Chapter 6 Chapter 6 * IUPAC Nomenclature Name as haloalkane.

Chemistry Final Study Guide Chapter 1- Matter and Change Chemistry - is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, the processes that matter undergoes, and the energy changes that accompany these processes. Chemical ? any substance with a definite composition. Mass ? measure of the amount of matter Matter ? anything that takes up space Atom ? the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element Element - pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler, substances and is made of one type of atom Compound ? a substance that can be broken down into simple stable substances. Each compound is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically bonded

BIOL 1020 - CHAPTER 2 LECTURE NOTES Chapter 2: The Chemical Context of Life You must understand chemistry to understand life (and to pass this course)! Elements and Atoms Elements ? substances that cannot be further broken down into other substances (at least by ordinary chemical reactions) every element has a chemical symbol (H for hydrogen, O for oxygen, etc.); this is most familiar from the periodic table Essential elements: elements that an organism needs to live. They are similar along different organism but there is some variation Trace element: elements that are required by an organism in only minute quantities E.g.: Iron (Trace) Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Carbon(Essential elements)

Molecule Main article: Molecule A molecule is the smallest indivisible portion of a pure chemical substance that has its unique set of chemical properties, that is, its potential to undergo a certain set of chemical reactions with other substances. Molecules can exist as electrically neutral units unlike ions. Molecules are typically a set of atoms bound together by covalent bonds, such that the structure is electrically neutral and all valence electrons are paired with other electrons either in bonds or in lone pairs.

Final Review Sheet Radio Active Decays Alpha decay occurs when the nucleus emits an alpha particle. Alpha particles have a positive charge and are equivalent in size to a helium nucleus, and so they are symbolized as . Alpha particles are the largest radioactive particle emitted. This type of radioactivity results in a decrease in the atomic number by 2 and a decrease in the atomic mass by 4. The equation below shows uranium-234 undergoing alpha decay:

Produced: Mastah E Chemistry Review Sheet 1 ? Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. ? A chemical is any substance that has a definite composition. This means it is always made of the same stuff no matter where the chemical comes form. Chemicals can exist naturally or be made. ? A chemical reaction is the process of which one or more substances are changed to produce one or more different substances. ? The recant is a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction. When written in an equation, the reactants are on the left hand side ? Products are the substances produced from chemical reactions and are on the right hand side of the arrow in equations.
