When you step into the large building filled with unfamiliar faces, you feel a rush of anxiety and your breakfast sits uneasily in your stomach. You walk down the hall to your first period class. You open the door to find everyone else has already found their seats and are busily chatting up their neighbors. Everyone turns their heads toward the door and watch you as you meander towards the teacher’s desk. The teacher, finally looking up, greets you and fails to pronounce your name correctly.

I wake up at six o’clock on the dot and get into the shower. I grab a piece of toast, a glass of milk, and sit down to my morning newspaper. Sin… opposite over hypotenuse… The math test today should be a breeze; I spent all last night going over the worksheets we got in class. There was a party at John’s house last night and I heard a lot of people went. What were they thinking? It perplexes me to imagine that people would neglect their studies to attend such a vulgar festival.

Let me start off by saying I was the most distracted person I have ever known my entire life. But all that changed as soon as I put in some effort.

• Plan accordingly how much time you will have to spend to finish your assignment(s).
• Work is your priority. Well, your life is your priority, but work is next. Pleasure/entertainment comes later.
• Have a study table. Don’t study on your bed or any other place where you do other things.

In our present-day economy, no field of service is untouched, especially education. With a down economy, budget cuts are paramount, and education has always been the first choice to drain needed money from, resulting in an education that is only a fraction of what it should be. In my own personal experience, my school has always suffered budget cuts, bringing down the value of education in an extra competitive environment. This paradoxical relationship is awkward for students to deal with.

As I wake up in the morning, I turn on my computer and go to three sites immediately: my gmail, to check email, Facebook, to see what my friends said in the few hours I was asleep, and Twitter, to see… what exactly?

I’m currently about to start what everyone around me labels “the most important year of your high school career”. Yes, junior year is upon me and most of my friends, the year that our high school counselors threaten could make or break us, and yet surprisingly very few of my peers seem to understand why your junior year in high school holds so much importance.
