US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

Diana Chetnik 12-14-13 Vocab APUSH Chapter 21 Abraham Lincoln- Became president on March 4th, 1861, and seven states left the Union. In his inaugural address he stated that secession was impractical. Fort Sumter- On April 12th, 1861 South Carolina attacked Fort Sumter and started the Civil War. Lincoln called for 75,000 soldiers. ?Mountain White?- nickname given to West Virginia Border states ? States of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia that could potentially secede. Contained a white population more than half of the Confederacy and could have almost doubled the manufacturing capacity of the South and increase the number of mules and horses by half.

Diana Chetnik 10-20-13 Presidential Outline APUSH pd. 7 Jefferson Jefferson was born in 1743 in Virginia. His father was a planter and surveyor, and his mother was a noble. He studied at the College of William and Mary and read law. In 1772 he married Martha Wayles Skelton. He was the ?silent member? of the Continental Congress and wrote the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson had founded the Democratic Republic. He was Washington?s Secretary of State and Adam?s Vice-President. He opposed many Federalist policies like the establishment of the National bank, and the Alien and Sedition Acts, forming the Kentucky Resolution.

Insurmountable- Too great to be overcome ?Kentucky Bluegrass?- European bluegrass that thrived on charred canefields and made ideal pastures for livestock, luring Americans into Kentucky. George Catlin- A painter and student of Native American life. Was one of the first Americans to push for the preservation of nature as a national policy. He observed Sioux Indians slaughter buffalo in 1832 in order to trade the animal?s tongues for the white man?s whiskey. He was appalled by this and proposed the creation of a national park, beginning with Yellowstone Park in 1872. ?Queen of the South?- What New Orleans was called.

Diana Chetnik 10-27-13 APUSH Ch. 11&12 Chapter 11 ?new navy?- The navy founded by Adams and seemed unnecessary and extravagant. Also known as ?John Adam?s Jackasses? Jefferson- The third president of the US. He won by a majority of 73 electoral votes to 65. He was inaugurated on March 4th, 1801 and reelected in 1804. Aaron Burr- Turned New York to Jefferson, helping him win the election. In 1804 challenged Hamilton to a duel, killing him and fled. In 1806 he was arrested and tried for treason. Was freed the next year. Lame-duck - A term used to humorously defined as a politician whose political goose has been cooked at the recent elections. John Adams- Second President of the US. Last federalist president.

Ominously- Giving the impression that something bad or unpleasant is going to happen Popular sovereignty- The doctrine that stated that the people of the territory should themselves determine the status of slavery. General Lewis Cass- ?father of popular sovereignty? A veteran of 1812, senator and diplomat. Was chosen to be the Democratic candidate. Democratic National Convention- took place in Baltimore and was when Cass was chosen to represent the Democrats Zachary Taylor- Nominated by the Whigs to be their candidate in the election. Won the Election of 1848. Died suddenly in 1850.

Disillusionment- A feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be. 2. ?Ohio Idea?- The redemption of greenbacks to the maximum extent possible. 3. ?Jubilee Jim? Fisk and Jay Gould- Two millionaires that controlled the gold market in the 1860s and 1870s. They wanted the treasury to refrain from using and selling gold, but the treasury eventually released the gold. 4. ?Boss? Tweed? Leader of the infamous Tweed Ring in New York City. His motto was ?Addition, division, and silence.? The New York Times exposed and publicized the corruption and Tweed offered the Times 5 million dollars, but they declined. Tweed died behind bars.

Chapter 15 ? The Ferment of Reform and Culture Vocabulary Dorothea Dix- responsible for improving conditions in jails, poorhouses and insane asylums throughout the u.s. and Canada; served as the superintendant of nurses for the union army during the civil war Washington Irving- author- "rip van winkle" and "the legend of sleepy hollow," the first american to be recognized in england (and elsewhere) as a writer Oliver Wendell Holmes- he is often considered considered one of the greatest justices in supreme court history. his opinions and famous dissents in favor of individual liberties are still frequently quoted today. he argued that current necessity rather than precedent should determine the rules by which people are governed; that experience, not logic, should be the basis of law.

Arden Barnes Mr. Batson APUSH 21 October 2013 Chapter 10 Vocabulary John Adams- A Federalist who was Vice President under Washington in 1789, and later became President by three votes in 1796. Known for his quarrel with France, and was involved in the XYZ Affair, Quasi War, and the Convention of 1800. Later though he was also known for his belated push for peace with France in 1800. Regarding his personality he was a "respectful irritation".
