Personality -an individuals characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting. Freud's view on personality: free association-a method of exploring the unconscious in which the person relaxes and says whatever comes to mind no matter how trivial or embarrasing. Freud believed it would open the doors to the unconscious. Psychoanaylsis- theory of personality that attributes thoughts and actions to unconsciouse motives and conflicts; the techniques used in treating psychological disorders by seeking to expose and interpret unconscious tensions. unconscious- a reservoir of mostly unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feeelings, and memories. -Personality Structures

Chp 18 Outline A. Plantations in the West Indies I. Colonization Before 1650 • Spansih settlers introduced sugar cane cultivation in to the west Indies shortly after 1500, but thrse colonies soon fell into neglect as attention shifted to colonizing the American mainland. After 1600, the West Indies revived as a focus of colonization, this time by northern Europeans interested in growing tobacco and other crops. • This New World leaf, long used by Amerindians for recreation and medicine was finding a new market among Europeans. Received opposition from few, like King James I of England, but was mass sold in 7,000 ships around England.

Brave New World?s utopia may be characterized as lacking individualism. The society is based on the leadership of one person alone. Uniformity is a major theme in the book. An example of this is a symbol of Henry Ford as the ?God? of the society. "You all remember, I suppose, that beautiful and inspired saying of Our Ford's: history is bunk"(22). The teacher in the class is telling the kids about Ford being the leader and inspiration. This shows that the society believes strongly in mass production or uniformity, even in people.

Cotton, Slavery, and the Old South Trades in the south included sugar, rice, tobacco, and COTTON created substantial wealth in the region Growth without Development The south remained agricultural through the 1860s Began the 19th century with few important cities and little industry. Plantation industry had been dependent on slave labor ?The south grew, but it did not develop.? Decline of the Tobacco Economy Market for Tobacco was notoriously unstable. Prices were subject to frequent depressions. Tobacco rapidly exhausted the land on which it grew. By 1830s many southern farmers were shifting their crops ? notably to wheat. Southern regions of coastal south continued to rely on rice, more stable and lucrative, however required substantial irrigation.

The literal definition of "Tri" is three, and a tone is a note. Three intervals that are all major 2nds, are a Tritone. For example, from "C" to "D" is a major 2nd. from "D" to "E" is a major 2nd, and, from "E" to "F#" is a major 2nd as well. These 3 major second intervals are a Tritone from "C" to "F#."
