The Protestant Reformation began with a posting of 95 theses on a church door in Wittenburg by a then unknown monk, Martin Luther. This act would soon bring sweeping change throughout Europe. The Catholic Church?s authority over the people began to crumble after many years of abuse and corruption. A split in Christianity occurred, and with it, new religious thinkers brought their beliefs to the masses. This would forever change the religious landscape in Europe.

Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon are married. 1514 Erasmus published another edition of The Praise of Folly. 1515 Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York, became Lord Chancellor of England and a Cardinal. 1515 Francois I was King of France to 1547.

Mckay. 422-433 Art and the Artist Florence- led the way in all arts ?There were so many good critics there, for the air of the city makes men quick and perceptive and impatient of mediocrity.? High Renaissance- 1500-1527 Rome took the lead as well. Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo all worked in Rome. Art and Power Powerful urban groups, guilds or religious confraternities commissioned works of art. Filippo Brunelleschi- was delegated by the Florentine cloth merchants to build the dome on the cathedral of Florence Lorenzo Ghiberti- designed bronze doors of the Baptistry. Religious themes appeared in all media Individuals and oligarchs also started sponsoring works of art.
