Name___________________________________ AP Human Geography - Chapter Six: Religion Introduction: (Page 191) 1. What questions about religion do geographers try to answer? Where and Why? 2. Why do geographers find the tensions between globalization and local diversity especially acute in religion? (Give five reasons.) People care deeply about their religion and draw their core values and beliefs from it Some religions have universal appeal and others local appeal Religious values show how people feel and the meaningful ways they alter the landscape Most (but not all) religions require strict adherence, so adopting a global religion could mean turning away from traditional local religion

American Puritans strove for over 100 years. James threatened to kill all those who refused to conform to the Church of England. Some members of the Church of England wanted to make the Protestant Reformation a part of people?s everyday life and get rid of all evidence of the Catholic Church. These people were called Puritans. In 190__ the Puritans fled to Holland. They didn?t stay very long, only a few years, because they found their kids were growing up Dutch, not English. So, they got a land grant from the Virginia Company of London to come to America. About 100 Puritans (Pilgrims) sailed from Plymouth England on the Mayflower, and dropped anchor in Massachusetts. This was a little off course, they were supposed to land in Virginia.

Any good speaker would appeal to all three of these things and the four authors do exactly that. They all predominantly capture an essence of both and pathos and logos, and lack a bit in ethos.

Evolution Debate: 1920?s and Now The debate over whether evolution should be taught in schools captured the nation?s attention during the Monkey Trial in 1925. John T. Scopes, a high-school biology teacher, was indicted for teaching Charles Darwin?s theory of evolution. Darwin?s theory of evolution states that human beings evolved by natural selection or random genetic mutation as opposed to the story of creation in the Bible. This angered the American people because they felt that the teaching of evolution was destroying faith in God and the Bible, and also that it was contributing to the moral breakdown of the youth. For this reason, John T. Scopes was found guilty and was fined one-hundred dollars for his actions.
