Religious fundamentalist is one of the most important ways in which a group can maintain a distinctive cultural identity. Religious groups oppose government policies seen as promoting social change conflicting with traditional religious values. The role of religion in organizing earth?s surface has diminished in some societies because of political and economic change. Islam has been affected by the conflict between religious values and modernization of the economy. The two architectural structures I chose are the Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) from 687?692 CE located in Jerusalem, Israel, and the Interior of Reims Cathedral from 13th century located in Reims France. Both reflect and worship their respectful Gods through imagery and architectural structure. At the same time both reflect different religious ideals and beliefs, are influenced by different time periods and styles, and are subsequently located in different locations.

The two paintings I chose are The Jewish Cemetery from Jacob van Ruisdael from 1654-1655 made with oil on canvas, and The Oxbow from Thomas Cole dated 1836 and also made with oil on canvas. I chose these two because despite taking on a seemingly plain subject (landscape), both were able to transform the scene into symbolic imagery with different lessons on faith, salvation, morality, and God as our creator.
