Chapter 12 The Cell Cycle and Mitosis The Key Roles of Cell Division Cell division functions in reproduction, growth, and repair Unicellular organisms (ex. Amoeba) will divide to reproduce entire organisms Cell division also will allows a multicellular organism to develop from a single cell The Key Roles of Cell Division DNA is passed from one generation of cells to the next without dilution. -cell duplicates it DNA - moves the 2 copies to opposite ends of the cell - and then splits into 2 daughter cells The Key Roles of Cell Division Concept 12.1 Cell Division distributes identical sets of chromosomes to daughter cells A cell?s genetic material is called its genome - prokaryote = single long DNA strand - eukaryote = number of DNA molecules Concept 12.1

MULTIPLE CHOICE. Choose the one alternative that best completes the statement or answers the question. Use the following information to answer the questions below. Thomas Engelmann illuminated a filament of algae with light that passed through a prism, thus exposing different segments of algae to different wavelengths of light. He added aerobic bacteria and then noted in which areas the bacteria congregated. He noted that the largest groups were found in the areas illuminated by the red and blue light. 1) What did he conclude about the congregation of bacteria in the red and blue areas? A) Bacteria are attracted to red and blue light and thus these wavelengths are more reactive than other wavelengths.

Maia Regman Mrs. Magnan Biology Honors 28 October 2013 Plant and Animal Cells Objective The objective of this lab was to learn what a microscope reveals about plant and animal cells. The completion of this lab should teach the participant the differences between plant and animal cells and how to examine samples of the covering tissues of a plant (the onion) and of an animal (the participant) using the epidermis and cells from a cheek swab of epithelial tissue. Materials Packet Pages L14 to L16 Onion Chunks Compound Microscope Microscope Slides Covers Slips Water Pipette Lugol?s Iodine Solution Tweezers (optional) Paper Towels Flat Toothpicks Procedures. Part A: Cells of the Onion Epidermis Gently peel off one of the thin layers of the inside of the onion chunk.

Maia Regman Mrs. Magnan Biology Honors 14 May 2014 What is Vitiligo? Following the release of his iconic album Thriller in 1983, Michael Jackson made news for something other than his music. Tabloids released reports that Michael bleached his skin and did not want to be black. Michael Jackson never commented on the matter until a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying ??this is the situation. I have a skin disorder that destroys the pigmentation of the skin; it?s something that I cannot help. Okay. But when people make up stories that I don?t want to be who I am, it hurts me.?

Christian Boujaoude August 17, 2014 AP Environmental Science Pd. 10 Daly FRQ Chapter 1 1. a.) A feasible explanation for the algal bloom in the pond could be that there was too much fertilizer applied to the lawn. Some of the run-off from the rain flowed down the lawn and went into the pond. This would then increase the nutrient supply in the pond and resulted in the algal bloom a few weeks later.

Emits a potent toxin that quickly kills fish 2. Could have up to 24 life stages a. Carnivorous stage b. Free floating amoeba c. Protective casing and able to remain dormant 3. The discovery of Pfiesteria in North Carolina Rivers created panic among the areas recreation and fishing industries 4. Many investigators were very skeptical and even thought that Pfiesteria didn?t produce toxins at all 5. Pfiesteria shows that releasing waste material into a river can affect the environment in complex and unexpected ways 6. Also displays how controversial how environmental science can be

DNA Replication INDIVIDUAL: List the enzymes/proteins involved in DNA replication and describe their role. What is a nucleotide composed of? What makes up the backbone of DNA? What are the DNA bases? Tell which are purines and pyrimidenes. Which bases pair together? What holds them together? GROUP: Replication of DNA follows the __________________________________model. Explain this model, in addition to the other two which DNA replication does not follow. A DNA strand has the following bases: A A G C C A. What are the bases on its complimentary strand? During DNA replication, nucleotides are brought in as______________. Why is this? (Bubble the right answer)
