1 Biology Chapter 51: Behavioral Biology Outline I. Behavioral Biology A. Behavioral knowledge has been studied for tens of thousands of years 1. The first humans used knowledge of animal habits to catch meals and avoid predators 2. Birds use songs to convey a variety of messages, including fertility, location, and territoriality a. These songs are useful for biologists as a fairly easy way to determine he effect of communication on all biological levels b. The study of bird songs has shows that both heredity and surroundings influence behavior 3. Understanding behavior is required in order to explain the various interactions of a species B. Although most behavior consists of physical activity and muscular movement,

We are placing unprecedented pressure on marine resources Half the world?s marine fish populations are fully exploited 25% of fish population are overexploited and heading to extinction Total fisheries catch leveled off after 1998, despite increased fishing effort populations of all ocean species we fish for today will collapse by the year 2048 People began depleting sea life centuries ago Some species hunted to extinction: Steller?s sea cow, Atlantic gray whale, Caribbean monk seal Overharvesting of Chesapeake Bay oyster beds led to the collapse of its fishery, eutrophication, and hypoxia Decreased sea turtle populations causes overgrowth of sea grass and can cause sea grass wasting disease People never imagined that groundfish could be depleted

A.???The Unhealthy Chesapeake 1.?????Life in the American wilderness was nasty, brutish, and short for the earliest Chesapeake settlers; malaria, dysentery, and typhoid took a cruel toll, cutting ten years off the life expectancy of newcomers (half of people born in early Virginia/Maryland did not survive to twenty) 2.?????The disease-ravaged settlements of the Chesapeake grew only slowly in the seventeenth century, mostly through fresh immigration from England; the majority of immigrants were single men in their late teens and early twenties, and most perished soon after arrival a.?????Surviving males competed for the affections of the extremely scarce women, whom they outnumbered nearly six to one in 1650

Chapter 20 Biotechnology Lecture Outline Overview: The DNA Toolbox ? In 1995, researchers sequenced the entire genome of a free-living organism, the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae. ? A mere 12 years later, genome sequencing was under way for more than 2,000 species. ? By 2007, researchers had completely sequenced hundreds of prokaryotic genomes and dozens of eukaryotic ones, including all 3 billion base pairs of the human genome. ? Rapid advances in DNA technology?methods of working with and manipulating DNA?had their roots in the 1970s. ? A key accomplishment was the invention of techniques for making recombinant DNA, DNA molecules formed when segments of DNA from two different sources?often different species?are combined in vitro.

Chapter 19 Viruses Lecture Outline Overview: A Borrowed Life ? Viruses are the simplest biological systems. ? Most viruses are little more than aggregates of nucleic acids and protein?genes in a protein coat. ? Are viruses living or nonliving? ? Viruses cannot reproduce or carry out metabolic activities outside of a host cell. ? Most virologists would probably agree that viruses are not alive but lead ?a kind of borrowed life.? ? Molecular biology was born in the laboratories of microbiologists studying viruses that infect bacteria. ? Experiments with viruses provided key evidence that genes are made of nucleic acids. ? Viruses were critical in working out most of the major steps in DNA replication, transcription, and translation.

How Are Fungi Important In Nature? Raven St. Jean Fungi play a major role in both nature and society in the sense that they are a huge resource for many things, like medicine. Fungi serve a purpose to the earth, humans, and many animals and plants. First, fungi are very beneficial to life on earth by recycling material. Without bacteria and fungi, gardening plants would be impossible. They lock up plant nutrients until they?re needed and can be used by the plants. This act reduces leeching of vital nutrients from the soil and makes a great home to plants. They also retain water in the soil for plants. The greatest deed that fungi do is act as a decomposer and break down dead matter into components that other plants and animals can eat.

What is the projected human population for the year 2050? 1- humans developed the ability to expand into diverse new habitats and different climate zones 2-emergence of early and modern agriculture allowed more people to be fed for each unit of land area farmed 3-the development of sanitation system, antibiotics, and vaccines helped control infectious disease agents.
